Jan Gardner has served and lead the Frederick County community as an elected official, serving 12 years as a County Commissioner, including 4 years as Board President, and for 8 years as Frederick County’s first County Executive. Jan was actively involved in the Maryland Association of Counties, including serving as President, and has strong connections with county leaders across the state. Jan also worked as the State Director for U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski making valuable connections and gaining firsthand experience in the work of the federal government.

Jan has always been drawn to the values of fairness, education and justice and the impact government can have on the lives of people. Accomplishments include record investments in education and school construction to keep the promise of public education, advancing affordable housing for working families; retaining Citizens and Montevue to care for the indigent elderly; providing fare free pubic transportation; initiating and adopting the award-winning Livable Frederick Master Plan; and, establishing the first office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Jan had been recognized as one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women and is a member of the Circle of Excellence. She has been honored with numerous awards including the Theodore W. Stephens Lifetime Achievement Award for Human Relations, Advocate of the Year for the Frederick Center, and the President’s Medal for Leaderships from St. John’s Catholic Prep.

An honor’s graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Finance and Economics and a M.B.A. from Xavier University, Jan’s motto is “all challenges are solved through relationships and all good relationships are fundamentally based on trust”.
